The latest Anthony Weiner scandal has given late night talk show hosts something to talk about besides Donald Trump, and no one ran with it further than Stephen Colbert on last night’s The Late Show. Stephen’s monologue was filled with some rock-solid puns and innuendos, and for that, we salute him. It was particularly fitting that Stephen would be the one to hit Weiner the hardest (seriously, even when you’re not trying to make puns, it’s impossible when the guy caught up in a sexting scandal’s last name is Weiner), because Weiner appeared on The Late Show only a month ago.

As we mentioned, the late night hosts are back in full force now that the Olympics are over. Without international athletics to distract us, we’re back to focusing on that other intense competition, the presidential race. Seth Meyers has become our go-to late night host for political humor, and he did not disappoint with his first “A Closer Look” segment since the break. In it, Seth Meyers ran down all of the Trump campaign shenanigans of the last two weeks and man, there were a lot! And some of the stuff (like the “Second Amendment People”) comments seemed like they happened a lot longer ago, didn’t they? Or maybe it’s just that the sheer length and volume of this campaign has warped our sense of time.

Jimmy Kimmel had the big get on Monday, as Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t come up very often in the discussion of political comedy in late night, but he’s sneakily one of the best interviewers of politicians out there. He’s good at walking the line between keeping things light (and making the candidates look fun-loving) and asking some real questions (which they may or may not want to answer).

While Last Week Tonight often dives into under-represented topics, the things that he talks about are rarely that controversial (particularly for his audience). Last Week Tonight: Auto Lending (August 14)

Over the past couple of years, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has shed a lot of light on the various predatory practices that target poor people and contribute to making it difficult to get and stay out of debt. Past stories have focused on debt buyers, municipal violations, and payday loans. This week John took a look at the auto industry, in particular the trend towards sub-prime auto loans, and the scary ways the prevalence of these types of loans reflects the sub-prime mortgage bubble that caused the 2008 recession. As usual, John used the experiences of real people to help to drive his point home and demonstrate the ways that bad auto loans can have a snowball effect on people’s financial futures. And, in the end, he enlisted the help of Keegan-Michael Key and Bob Balaban to create his own advertisement for auto loans (from “Crazy Johnny’s”) that’s just a little bit more truthful than the others.
